Modified Stanley Tools 25' PowerLock tape measure

N7433.4.P45 A122 artists book

This “book” challenges our perceptions of what a book can be. It is inspired by Medieval girdle books, small religious or philosophical texts worn on the waist. Pfeiffer recasts this object by modifying a Stanley Tools 25' PowerLock tape measure, replacing the measurements with statistics relating to the passing of a single minute. Between each inscription is an illustration evoking futurist machines that appear to have an undisclosed utilitarian function. Although the inscriptions muse on the passage of time, many of them deal with the body, ecology, and climate, resulting in a poem that entangles the human body and its residue on the earth.
