Five Fonts Inspired by Lesbian Hand Lettering: A Type Specimen and History Zine
Erin Moore
2022 CE, Baltimore, Maryland, USA
Risograph screenprint on paper
Created as a tribute to lesbian/feminist newspapers from the 70s and 80s, which were often produced with limited funds and resources, Five Fonts epitomizes both the visual and conceptual culture of zines. It references these periodicals’ lack of refinement in typesetting and layout, as well as the significance of hand-lettering in forming an anti-mainstream aesthetic. By designing each font to mirror the publications' cover illustrations, Moore has immortalized the visual language of lesbian and queer history in America. “Lavender,” “AIAW?,” “leaping,” “onyx,” and “Vision” can be downloaded for free at the following link: bit.ly/leslettering.
