A-stick

Erin Hoffman

" 'A' stick" is the documentation of a process that allows me to wonder how words are spoken; whether they fall apart or stay intact. Oftentimes, we choose to hear what we want to hear, and believe that we understand. Made entirely of glass, this work has letters fused in glass powder that is pulled out by the liquid hot end of a thin rod of glass. The letter “A” is revealed, on repeat, from a white canvas. For me, it is not about what the message is but what it is made of, rather- how it is being said.

Erin Hoffman is an interdisciplinary artist investigating the subtle transmission of messages. Hoffman is interested in the complexity surrounding conversation–when text falls short, messages overlap, and meaning is distorted. She graduated with her BFA at Tyler School of Art (2015) and recently received her MFA at Alfred University (2020). Hoffman worked as the Departmental Assistant at the University of Louisville glass department from 2015-2018. She has worked and exhibited at many schools and institutions including Pilchuck School of Crafts in Washington, Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle, California State University in San Bernardino, Urban Glass in Brooklyn, and Peter’s Valley School of Craft in New Jersey. A large part of her practice includes traveling to cultivate conversation, assist other artists, and to spark the unlimited possibilities of glass.
