Colors to Life

Lukas Milanak

"Colors to Life" shows the fracture and decay of 2000 degree glass immersed in water. Two polarizing light filters sit between the camera and the light source, revealing internal stresses building inside the solid block. The resulting scene reveals a mesmerizing display of color and light, as the simple object comes alive.

The potential of the people and things around me captures my imagination, calling me to build this curiosity into each piece that leaves my studio. What happens in between seeing potential and realizing it goes beyond simply building objects. There is magic in the making, alchemy in the experimentation, and joy in sharing that with others. I find the poetry of elemental transformations like these in my everyday life, and combine them with found materials to create playful artwork that aligns symbolic meaning and scientific form. I hope the work serves as an entry point into intrigue.

My career in glassblowing has its oldest roots in my desire to learn how things are made. I earned a BFA from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art, and apprenticed at the Corning Museum of Glass. In 2018, I moved to Beacon, New York, where I continue to experiment and refine my practice.
