Jules DeFonso
I created this piece for my Introduction to Art Therapy class this fall. This class has helped me to explore subconscious expression within my own art which has helped me to work through my quarantine experience. Art therapy serves as a non-verbal avenue to express oneself. So, I decided to create a piece “explaining” a specific feeling that I struggle to put into words. This piece shows the tightening feeling I get in my throat right before I try to speak when I feel like I am about to cry.

TYL ‘ 23 | BA, Art Therapy
Jules is a Sophomore Art Therapy Major. She discovered her passion for art therapy while volunteering to make art with those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia in her area. She spent three years working closely and creating art with a woman named Joanne. Unfortunately, Joanne passed due to Covid-19 as it swept through her nursing home. Jules dedicates the art she has created this year to Joanne’s passing. Joanne was a perfect example of how art can heal oneself and build new relationships.
