 Lesson #1: Watercolor Self Portraits

The goal of this lesson is to explore proportions in portraiture and how these proportions can be altered to express the likeness of an individual. Knowledge of proportions will allow students to make decisions about their work in order to represent themselves in their desired way.

We will observe how to draw specific characteristics and features of a face by drawing a diverse set of images. Students will then take their knowledge from their practice and apply it to a photograph of their own face. Developing these observational skills gives students control over how they represent themselves through their drawing, Lastly, students will explore symbolism through portraits. After observing other artists, students will make decisions about what is important to their identity and how that could be represented through techniques such as color, scale, and proportion.

Lesson #2: Paper Cut Light Boxes

Through this project, students are encouraged to explore areas of their lives in which they see and/or experience positivity. Students will reflect on their own lives to pick a moment that they experienced happiness, gratitude, hope, joy, or serenity. Students will use images, words, and lettering style to communicate the meaning of a specific word chosen for their composition. Students will consider elements and principles in design to create a visual appealing work that expresses and illuminates their chosen word.
