Sophie Stasio

I created this piece while studying in Rome at the start of 2020. While experimenting with surface manipulation, I discovered a new technique that caused the piece to stray from what I had originally envisioned. When I was sent home from Rome during the pandemic, I knew I wanted to bring this piece with me, but I would have to mail it with no guarantee of arrival. However, after five months of being trapped in the international mail system and shuffled between various locations in the United States, the piece was finally delivered to my doorstep. This year has been full of uncertainties, but I am learning how to adapt and become more comfortable with the unpredictable nature of life.

My practice consists of arranging and observing objects that I gather from nature and my daily life. I am fascinated with layers both in nature and in art, and I seek to show time by building up marks and carving them away. I enjoy experimenting with alternative surfaces and materials such as oil, acrylic, ceramics, collage, and found objects. In creating my work, I hope to bring attention to the beauty of nature through the touch of a human, so that other humans care about it.
