Visual Studies: 10 Years
2011-2021
Visual Studies is a contemporary interdisciplinary field of inquiry grounded in analyzing the methods and effects of visuality, vision, and visual culture. The BA in Visual Studies trains students to understand and articulate the latter through both studio practice (making) and thinking (academic research and writing). Tyler School of Art and Architecture launched the BA in Visual Studies in 2011. Since then more than 130 students have graduated from our program. They have continued their education in graduate programs as diverse as Art Therapy, Public Health, Fine Arts, Architecture, Book Restoration, Curatorial Practice, and Arts Management. Others have found work in the non-profit cultural sector and in museums and galleries, have started their own creative businesses, work in design fields, and in work in education, amongst many other occupations. To celebrate the first ten years of the program and to recognize our impressive alumni, Visual Studies hosted an event on November 17, 2021. Many alumni attended and were able to reconnect despite the limitations of the COVID-19 pandemic. This virtual exhibition showcases our Visual Studies alums who responded to our questionnaire about their experience before and after graduation. We plan to add more alumni profiles to this site on a rolling basis.
